It's looking more and more like the first official tournament of the season is going to take place on Friday, July 4, 2008. We're off to a slow start, but is there a better way to celebrate our nation's birthday than with beer die? I think not! So, if you have plans to go away for the long weekend, cancel them, if you have a picnic to go to that day, go late, or if you have an infant, bring the kid. More details to come...

2007 Midland Invitational (Results)

K O sunk the first shot he took in this tournament and would drain a total of five, all in his first three games. But in the end, Sauce was Boss. Ron Gambardella turned in the defensive performance of his lifetime, robbing several cups hit throughout both the round robin and bracket portions of the tournament. Papa Goose locked up up his second straight Midland Invitational and KO got his first taste of a major championship. In what was perhaps the most balanced field in Meriden Beer Die history, KO & Sauce overcame the eventual third place finishers, Ricky & Big Cat, who played stellar all day and knocked out prohibitive favorites Joey & Kelvin by beating them twice. In the championship the Goosenecks met a fired up JJ and an upstart Slo-Jo who turned in a tremendous tournament in his own right. Sauce & KO just were not to be denied today, however, winning their final two games without needing a sink. I guess Suace chose the right partner. Congrats to the champs!

Deez Boyz Invitational Predictions

So I just received by an anonymous person the pairings for the Midland Invitational Tourney that is being held at Pablo's working grounds the Annex. Though, it took some time but the field looks primed and ready for another great tourney of Beer-die. The field to me looks strong, to quite strong, pairings for the most part are very equal, but someone has to make a prediction and who better than this guy!

With the 10 teams that I have been givin, it's hard to say how the tourney will be run so I will give you my top 6 that I think should advance with my pair of championship game teams.

NOT ADVANCING

MIF/OX- Mif needs a great, and I mean great defensive player along side of him. And even though I have heard great things about the man named Ox, Mif will have to dress in red and bring an extra set of horns to advance.

RICK/CAT- I haven't picked Rick since I got back, nor will I now. I hate this kid so much, he plays big when I am not on his team. If I was Cat I would change teammates and get an extra set of paws.

KEV/JESSE- These guys won't have a chance. They'll be playing with their phones attached to the ears and pickum sheets all over the table, this will be a distraction from the getgo. I'll take Michigan in the over and Kev/Jesse in the under...(5 points)

HECK/TOAD- Love this team but someone has to go. I hear great things about the Heckler, and Toad finally joining a beer-die tourney should be tons of fun. Howie Hewitt won't be in attendance but the reason for this team not advancing is because he is always on their mind!

NARROWING IT DOWN TO TWO

PABLO/DOCTOR- I told The Doctor that I wouldn't pick against him but being a blogger I lied. Pablo will be playing on his turf where him and I have some great memories of being teammates. But, this is as far as they go as the Doctor will be looking the whole tourney for a Pitbull armed with some Jameson to come and save the day.

JJ/FREDDIE- JJ tends to step up his game in tourneys like this especially with a rookie on his team. The competition will get tighter as they advance and as Freddie starts to struggle, JJ will remember when Freddie sold to an underager at the packy and it'll get him fired up and they will start to falter.

KO/SAUCE- I told Keith that I wouldn't pick him to go to the finals anymore, but this is not the reason. Sauce got to pick his partner for this tourney and the jinx is on for Keith. Like Sauce has said in the comments, "Too many players, means I'll get too drunk!". And he will and so will you Keith, so with this I give you both a goodnight to the start of a long weekend.

HEAVY/BRI G- Very interest combo! A couple of Irishman fighting for the crown. So Heavy I give you this as a Labor Day present....N O T T O D A Y!!!!!! Bounced, your rain has dried up!

CHAMPIONSHIP

JOE JOE/KELVIN vs. SHORTY/GIBBY- Wow, love this match up! Two players that own a basketball court and two that would like to own one in their backyard. Joe had a tough outing in his last tournament and Shorty is showing signs of stepping it up into Hall of Fame status. My sleeper player in this tourney is going to be Kel who is finally going to get the hang of this game and who better to be on your side than Maloney's all-time leading scorer. This game won't even be close as Joe-Joe gets back into beer-die form and Kel hits the walk off for their first beer-die title. But, the real match is after the game, when Gibby and Shorty are so full of beer muscles that they really challenge each other to a game of basketball. As this happens they are doing so much talking and less putting the ball in the hole that they start to duke it out and the game ends in a 0-0 tie. The fight breaks up and as both players are cross eyed they decide to apologize for being stupid and Gibby's wedding next month is canceled as the two kiss and make-up, literally. LOL!

Midland Invitational 2007

The 2nd Annual Midland Invitational, held Labor Day weekend, will be taking place on Saturday, September 1st. The location of this tournament is still to be determined. HOF and Sauce will look to defend their 2006 Invitational Championship. I'll post the starting time and location as soon as I find someone to host the tournament.

I think we proved that we are the premier beer die league around, just like the quote says in the top right hand corner of this site, by having all 4 Midland teams finish in the top 5.

Carlstrom delayed These Guys’ first game for an hour and a half because Murdz had a teacher certification test that took a lot longer than we had all expected. At 2:30 Murdz was still missing in action and I was posed with a serious dilemma. Carlstrom gave me the option of picking up a new partner, which Mif was more than ready to oblige, take an automatic loss and go into the loser’s bracket, wait for Murdz to start the first game and lose a point for every minute he was late, or start the game playing solo and have to drink from both cups for every point I lost. I chose the latter.

I was up 8 to 2 when Murdz walked in and was welcomed by a thunderous roar of boos, but like time and time again, he demonstrated why his nickname is “H.O.F.” He hit a cup on his first shot and sank his second to walk-off and These Guys won their first game 8 to 0 in dramatic fashion. We went on to win our next 5 games to finish the tournament undefeated and 2007 Champs. Murdz hit cup after cup and I had 8 sinks to tie JJ with the most sinks ever in Carlstrom Beerdie history.

Team Steam lost their very first game, but battled back to take 3rd place. El Nino played his trademark “Velcro” defense and The Hawk was voted the “Best Dressed” player at the tournament. With a wardrobe the size of his, he didn’t mind going home with beer and grass stains on his neatly pressed collard shirt. That just goes to show you he’s a player that gives it his all.

JJ was JJ and caught fire sinking 8 shots throughout the day. Heavy, impressively, did not toss a single die off the table the entire tournament, which is huge because of the automatic loss of a point rule. Baseline finished in 4th, losing to These Guys twice and Team Steam in the 3rd place game.

The 94’ Ed Walsh All Stars had a roller coaster ride to their 5th place finish. They were dominant in their first victory, but almost lost to the only female team in the tournament. Heck ignored Chet’s repeated warnings to stop doing shots with “Blue” while sitting on the sideline waiting to play each game. Regardless, they played well and should have had the opportunity to play for 3rd, but because of some strange rules, which were constantly changing, didn’t get the chance.

Since JJ and I were tied with 8 sinks a piece, although JJ will complain that I bounced one in, we had a shootout to determine who would win the “Dead Eye Dick” award. This is a Carlstrom Beerdie award that goes to the player with the most sinks. We both missed our first 5 playoff shots. JJ took his sixth shot and missed again. I sank mine and took home the award.

While many of my fellow Beer Die compadres take the show on the road today to participate in the Carlstrom Beer Die Tournament, including 2006 Player of the Year Award Winner Jamie Jones, I decided that I would take a look at the probable candidates for this season's end of the year awards. We are just about midway through the Beer Die season with three major tournaments down and about two more to go before the Michael Myers Massacre ends the season on Halloween.

In-State Competition

We’re taking the show on the road today. There are 8 Midland Beer Die players heading to Rocky Hill to participate in the 11th Annual Carlstrom Beerdie Tournament. The rules for this tournament are the same except for two. The first rule is your team automatically loses a point if you toss off the table. The second rule is you don’t have to catch the die if it bounces off the side of the table when playing defense, unless it hits the cup. I like our rules better, but I do need to pay homage to this tournament for getting me hooked on the game. They also have their own Hall of Fame point system. Therefore, there will be no Midland Beer Die points earned for the participants. Hopefully, we’ll fare pretty well. I’ll post our results later today or tomorrow.

2007 Red Cup Open (Results)

Two tournaments...two trophies. Not a bad career for Chris Wrenn who teamed with his Heavy cousin for their second title of the season. Team Meat is now tied with Team Hardware for the most career 1st place finishes. The only difference is that the 'Meaty' cousin combo has won every tournament they've entered together. This team was dominant throughout the day losing only once in the round robin portion to gain the bye to the title game. By then KO & Shorty had run out of gas and the Championship Game was almost anti-climactic. Congrats!

1st Place -- Team Meat (KRG & C.Wrenn)

3rd Place -- Team Jameson (Pitbull & Love Doc)

One of the favorites when the day began, 'That's What She Said' had an extremely disappointing start to the day. They opened with losses in two of their first three round robin games and had to fight just to end up in a three way tie for the 3rd and final seed of the bracket portion. Once they got there, they played top notch Beer Die, winning three straight en route to the Championship Game. Keith sunk 6 cups and Shorty played strong defensively all day. Along the way they avenged earlier defeats to Team Gooseneck & Team Jameson before running out of steam against the eventual champs.
Before this tournament began, there had been some question about the quality of play in the Red Cup Open, because of some of the top players not being in attendance. Well, this wound up as one of the most exciting tourneys in recent history, due in large part to the inspired play of Team Jameson. Love Doc and Pitbull came out of the round robin with the #2 Seed, going 4-2 and shocking everyone in their quest to prove Deez wrong. Marc 'Pitbull' LeFort completed the first ever error free day in tournament history and Nick 'Love Doc' Smith continued his flair for the dramatic by walking off against 'Flock of Geese' with a bounce in sink. These two clowns have incredible team chemistry and they could be a force in future tournaments...

Deez Boyz Red Cup Predictions

First off I would like to start off by saying that this is a farce that each team gets to play six games to build their Hall of Fame Points for a tournament with only seven teams in it. Or maybe, I'm just still pissed about adding only 3 points to my status in two tournaments when I was back. Either way I am going to build my very own table very soon and try and get these country folks to learn some other type of drinking games besides quarters and drinking every time the race car does a lap.

For some reason "The Red Cup" tourney doesn't have the fire I was looking forward to writing about. Maybe, again I am jealous that I won't be a part of it. Or maybe if the Farone brothers had a sac there would be more to write about. Especially when I thought that Chad and KO were one of favorites in the July 4th tourney. Chad step up your game!!!

Sorry Bri and Pete, 6 games of drinking for Bri is not a good thing....out!

Cat and Heck, the highest weighed tandem in the history of Midland Beerdie won't cut it, plus Heck will want to drink the beer instead of trying to put the die in the damn cup!

You better hope that shots of Jameson aren't on the table for this duo. Pitbull and Nick might surprise some teams but I can't see them finishing in the top 3. Don't hurt me Marc but...."YOUR OUTTA HERE!!!!"

Three gone one more left and I am tossed between teams Hogan Bros. and Flocks of Geese. As much as I would like to see Mif and Gibby go all the way to the finals I find it hard to believe that Joe Joe will be denied a second chance at first championship. But, he does have a streaky player in Ronbo playing with him and if he plays like he did on the 4th they'll be all done. Also, the Hogan Brothers will probably spend much of the time debating on shots and who is suppose to catch the die in certain spots, as well as talking about their dislike for Shorty. Its a toss up but I am going with Maloney's all-time leading scorer and his sidekick Ronny to nice.

So that means I got the big three of Team Meat, Flocks of Geese and to my displeasure I am putting the tandem of KO and the little guy as the team waiting in the finals finishing in first place after the round robin. I hate to do it to ya Keith because I've picked you before, but I think that Chris is going to have his game face in full effect this weekend,(we all know what that face looks like too) and this could be his closest chance at a title with the small field playing. My condolences to team Meat I have yet to see Wrenn play yet and maybe this is a blessing in disguise KRG. If I don't pick you that is added motivation. So what I am going to do is stay with my guts and have KO and Shorty winning the Heavy's Red Cup Open over the likes of some geese.

Tournament Format

It will be set up as a round robin, where every team will play each other. Therefore, each team is guaranteed 6 games. The top 3 teams advance to the championship round. The team with the best overall record earns an automatic bid into the championship game, and the 2nd and 3rd place teams will play to see who plays the 1st place team.

Heavy's Red Cup Open

Sharpen up those skills gentlemen! This is the 1st Annual Red Cup Open Tournament taking place next Saturday, July 21, 2007 at Keith "Heavy" Garceau's house. Since this is an "Open," players choose their own teammates, but there will still be a maximum number of teams allowed into the tournament. You can sign you and your partner up in the comments section, and make sure to include your team name. It will start as a Round Robin to determine who will get into and the seedings for the Championship Bracket. Teams should arrive at Heavy's by 11:30 to pay your entry fee, which is still yet to be determined, and get some practice in because first toss is at 12 sharp. Parking is somewhat limited on Swain Avenue, so teams should try to drive together. It will be a day filled with suds, sh#@ talking, and sinks. Hope to see you there!

2007 Independence Invitational (Results)

With apologies to Marc 'Pitbull' LeFort who won his first ever major championship, this tournament was all about 'H.O.F.' . Through just three major tourneys Dan now holds one 3rd place finish and two 1st place victories, all with different partners. He is the Barry Bonds of Meriden Beer Die, not playing in every major, but when he does he is clearly the most feared competitor. He and the Pitbull made mince meat of the competition this year, going 4-0 and winning the 07' Independence Invitational in a record setting time of less than two hours. The surprise of the tournament was undoubtedly Joey and MIF. This odd pairing lost their first game before reeling off four straight victories including a redemption game against eventual third place finishers JJ and Pablo. El Nino was nothing less than extraordinary offensively as he came within two sinks of JJ's record nine in one tournament. He might have been just as solid defensively earning the nickname 'Velcro' as he time and again snatched the die from would be points. Maynard now has his first ever top three finish without JJ as his partner and in doing so catapulted himself into the third spot on the all time points list...

Independence Day Tournament

In honor of our country declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776, as well as celebrating Dennis "The Fonz" Redican's return to the Silver City, we will be having our 2nd major tournament of 2007 on the 4th of July. The players, teams, and tournament format are still to be determined. There will be a $10 to $15 entry fee for each player. Midland Beer Die t-shirts will NOT be given out at this particular tournament. With that said, it was brought to my attention that the Midland Beer Die rules have yet to be put in writing, so here they are...

RULES OF THE GAME

Game Play

Teams of 2 take turns tossing the die to the other side of the table in an attempt to make it in one of the cups, hit one of the cups, or hit the end of the table and have the die fall to the ground without an opposing team member catching it. Teams roll the die to see which will toss first. The team who rolls the higher number tosses first.

The die must be tossed underhand and must travel higher than the tosser’s head in route to the other end of the table toward one of the opposing teams’ cups. The tosser’s hand cannot cross the end of the table while in the act of tossing. Teams alternate tosses while also alternating team members. The player tossing the die must let the other team know which cup or side of the table that he or she is aiming at. The die must land on the side of the table the tosser has indicated, on or over the short line. The toss is dead if the die lands on table short of the line and it becomes the other teams’ toss.

Scoring

Scoring starts at 8 points and then counts down to 0. When a team loses a point both members have to drink ¼ of the cup of beer.

If the toss is of legal height and distance and the die lands anywhere in play and bounces off the table in any direction, a member of the defensive team must catch the die with one hand without trapping it against his or her body. The die can be bobbled by one or both players as long as it is caught by one of them before it hits the ground. If the defensive team does not catch the die, they lose 1 point and each member has to drink ¼ of his or her beer.

If the die lands in the cup the tosser was aiming at, either on the fly or on a bounce, the defensive team loses 2 points and each member has to drink ½ of his or her beer.

If the die hits the cup the tosser was aiming at and stays on the table, the defensive team loses 1 point and each member has to drink ¼ of his or her beer. These same rules apply if the die lands in the cup and bounces out or knocks over the cup and slides out.

If the die hits the cup the tosser was aiming at, ricochets off and hits the other cup, and stays on the table the defensive team loses 2 points and each member has to drink ½ of his or her beer.

If the die hits the side of the table the tosser was aiming at, ricochets off and hits the other cup, and stays on the table the defensive team loses 1 points and each member has to drink ¼ of his or her beer.

If the die hits the cup the tosser was aiming at, ricochets off and bounces up into the other cup, the defensive team loses 3 points and each member has to drink ¾ of his or her beer. This shot is extremely rare. I have only seen it happen once in a non-tournament game.

If the die totally misses the table on a toss and a player on the defensive team catches it before it hits the ground, the offensive team loses 1 point and each member has to drink ¼ of his or her beer.

Rookie of the Tournament, Co-MVP of the Tournament and two sinks in the Championship game including the walk-off. Who, you might ask, am i referring to? Christopher Wrenn, that's who. Not a bad debut as Chris combined with his cousin Keith to shock the Beerdie world in ending JJ's streak of first place finishes. Chris' title game heroics overshadowed KRG's dominant offensive & defensive performance on Saturday afternoon. Congrats to team W.S.P. who won despite not winning their division, which would have earned them a first round bye. This victory cements Keith's status as a top tier player and puts him in the top five in all major statistical categories...

Beerdie Tournaments can make for some strange bedfellows...JJ & the Kid made the most of an interesting pairing by winning their division and advancing all the way to the finals before falling to team W.S.P. The fact that they accomplished all this on a day in which the all time points leader failed to sink one shot, makes it all the more impressive a feat...

The Midland Memorial also marked the return of the legend that is DM. This was Dan's first appearance since winning last year's Invitational. This time he was matched up with confident newcomer Nick 'Doctor' Smith. These two went undefeated in divisional play behind Dan's 12 cups hit and the doctor of defense, but faltered in the semifinals after receiving their first round bye. They did rebound to defeat 'Team Irish' in the third place game, but Dan was clearly not happy with anything other than a 1st place finish...

Team Irish began the day as the prohibitive favorite with rookie of the year candidate Jonny Fid joining the 'Irish Assassin' K O on his home court. But after a strong start, they would falter against JJ & Kid in the semi-finals and Murdz & Lovins in the 3rd place game. K.O. is now the highest ranking player to have never won a major tournament. He is also now 1-4 lifetime against his friend and 'beerdie' father figure H.O.F.

Jamie Jones - In the first official season of Midland Beer Die, Jamie Jones proved to be a dominant force winning back to back titles after finishing 3rd in the Midland Invitational. J.J. teamed with Mif to finish in the top three of each major tournament of the season. His total of 181 points puts him atop the all time list. Jamie's 40 cups hit led all competitors and his 13 sinks were second only to KO. During the Michael Myers Massacre in October, J.J. set the all time record with 9 sinks in one tournament. Congratulations to Jamie Jones on winning the 2006 Player of the Year Award!

2006 Fall Classic (Results)

The second major tournament of the beer-die season did not go without some controversy. JJ & MIF turned out victorious, but how they got there became an issue that left a bad taste in the mouths of many participants. Deez & Pablo were knocked out in the round of eight after finishing 4-0 in the round-robin portion. Tough break for a team that thought they were going to recieve a 1st round bye. JJ & MIF took advantage in squeeking past team 'Fever' in the semi-finals and wrapping up the title. JJ is the new overall points leader thanks in part to a remarkable 28 cups hit through two major tournaments.
